  29. I'm hesitant to do this, but there's potential for this to get out of hand 
  30. with misunderstandings.

  32. I've been corresponding privately with Karl about a product that is now 
  33. available. It's called the Windows Internet Tour Guide. It's a book that 
  34. comes with a disk and I'm the author (I'm the author of lots of books 
  35. including the Mac Internet Tour Guide and the PC Internet Tour Guide), so 
  36. take all of this with a pretty big grain of salt.

  38. The software that comes with the book is NetManage's Chameleon Sampler v3.11 
  39. (including the WINSOCK.DLL, integrated SLIP and PPP, mail, ftp, and TELNET). 
  40. I'm not going to pull any punches. There are better e-mail clients and FTP 
  41. clients that are just as good. But the Chameleon WINSOCK.DLL is the best I've 
  42. seen. I haven't found anything it won't work with. In fact, it was the only 
  43. one I could get to work consistently and reliably (but then, I'm mostly a Mac 
  44. person, so go figure).

  46. THERE IS A DOWNSIDE. READ WHAT FOLLOWS CLOSELY:

  48. The software included with the book works only with SLIP and PPP connections. 
  49. Direct Ethernet connections ARE NOT SUPPORTED. If you need Ethernet support, 
  50. NetManage's Chameleon (the full package) is the best I've seen.

  52. The book started shipping last week; it should start showing up in stores in 
  53. a few more weeks.

  56. /pub/visitors-center/windows-internet-tour-guide/ directory. (The files are 
  57. in Adobe Acrobat and No Hands Common Ground format.) Please be aware that I'm 
  58. in the process of moving this archive to a different machine sometime soon 
  59. (the domain name address will be the same) so there may be a problem with 
  60. connections for as long as a day.
